How To Be Successful In Sales
The Psychology of Selling
Today’s public perception of the sales profession is in dire need of a makeover. This negative perception has kept a lot of very talented people from becoming financially free, spending more quality time with family, and living life to the fullest. How do you view sales? The fact that you’re reading this tells me that you know that the sales profession has unlimited income earning potential waiting to be unlocked, but maybe you don’t know if it’s for you. You may be in sales and want to take yourself to the next level but you understand that you have to learn, study, and apply to become a top income earning sales professional. Or you might think sales people are shady. Most people think the latter and it’s very common for people to want to avoid sales people like the plague.
How do you feel when you enter a department store and you see the male or female sales person walking towards you with a big smile on their face? The sales person walks up and ask “Is there anything I can help you find?” and without hesitation and before they even finish the sentence do you quickly blurt out “I am just looking!”? This is how most people would respond in this situation but there is a very good reason why they feel this way. Due to a small number of unethical slick talking con men a very negative public picture has been painted about the profession. The Broadway plays Death of a Salesman about Willy Loman a salesman with deep depression and dissatisfaction with himself that lead to his suicide. Why aren’t plays called Death of a Doctor or Death of a Lawyer? The television shows the salesman wearing plaid pants, a really short tie, and smoking a stinky cigar and this leaves a very lasting impression on people.
Why is this important to understand?
To be a successful sales professional in your market or industry there are very effective fundamentals that must be learned, understood, and applied. Sales success is more that chance or luck. To be successful you must constantly be a student of the craft by finding books, video, and audio that you find to be effective. The Psychology of Selling – Successful Selling For a New Economy is a highly effective book available on Amazon that is helping sales professionals become high income earners, helping people, and improving lives. To be a successful sales professional in today’s economy you must understand the Psychology of Selling.
People Hate To Be Sold, but They Love To Buy
The biggest mistake made by most sales professionals that fail to make consistent high commission is a misunderstanding of what they are there to do for this prospect. Most sales people think they are there to sell products, services, or goods to prospects and this is why so many fail and jump from job to job complaining about how bad the last company’s product was, how expensive it was, and why nobody was buying. Sales has nothing to do with trying to sell people anything, sales is all about helping people buy what they are looking for and providing solutions.
I was speaking at a conference in St. Louis Missouri and I was sitting backstage when I heard one of the other speakers say “A good sales person can sell anything to anyone.” I disagree with this because if you feel like you can sell someone pink shoes if they are looking for blue or you can sell someone a plane that’s looking for a boat you’re in for a tough road. A good sales professional doesn’t sell they find people looking for what they offer and help them buy it.
