How Much is Your Bad Credit is Costing You?

April 24th, 2009

Having a bad credit score will cost you a lot more than a higher interest rate for a few loans. It extends into many parts of your financial life. So many people fail to understand how important their credit is until they try to buy a home or take out a loan. People with bad credit usually know that they will have to pay higher interest rates. But they often don’t realize how deeply they will really be affected.

Let me give you an example. If you have a credit score of 720, you can pretty much expect to get the best rate available. For our example, that is 6%. If you have a credit score that is good, but just not perfect — say 700 — you could expect to find an interest rate of 6.15%. Not a huge difference. But if you have a credit score of 555, which is considered very poor, you can expect to pay approximately 9.6%. This could result in as much as $500 a month more on a mortgage. That’s a lot of money.

In addition to having to pay a higher interest rate, many borrowers with bad credit scores end up paying higher mortgage loan origination fees. To qualify for the much advertised zero percent of low APR financing offered by many car manufacturers, you must have near perfect credit. If you have poor credit, you will probably have to deal with a sub-prime lender (also known as the no loan is turned down lender). You could pay an interest rate of 25%!

If you already have a bad credit score, a credit card probably isn’t a good idea. But it is one of the ways to rebuild your credit. Be prepared to see interest as high 30%, if you can find a credit card at all. You will probably have to pay annual fees as well. Some people are even asked to pay a set-up fee to even get the card. It is often easier to go with a secured card than try to find an unsecured one.

Most people are unaware of the fact that insurance companies use their credit scores to determine risk. The assumption is that people with lower credit scores are at a higher risk for claims than are those with good credit. A person with good credit could pay as much as 10% less than someone with bad credit. This is seen in life insurance, homeowner’s insurance, auto insurance and other forms of insurance. Your bad credit can cost you hundreds of dollars a year in insurance premiums.

But that isn’t all. You could have to pay a higher deposit to lease or rent an apartment. You could even be turned down for a job. Low credit scores will cost you thousands of extra dollars a year. Take the steps to increase your score. While it isn’t easy and it takes time, it is well worth it.

Could Chewing Sugarless Gum Be The Next Dieting Craze?

April 24th, 2009

By: Heather Hajek

When you have your next sweet craving, you may want to try chewing on a stick of sugar free gum. It could not only suppress your craving, but may even boost your energy. Chewing gum has been proven to curb sweet cravings while energizing gum chewers and increasing their alertness into the afternoon or evening.

If you have a snack or sweet craving, reach for the gum, it could not only increase your energy, but also curb the cravings. Gum chewers who snack randomly through the day, reportedly snacked less when they chewed gum according to a new study. The study funded by Wrigley Science Institute, part of Wrigley’s chewing gum company, conducted to determine if gum chewing could curb sweet cravings was released on April 19th at the Experimental Biology 2009 conference.

During their study, researchers evaluated 115 men and women, 66 percent of them women, ranging in age from 18-54 who were regular gum chewers. The study participants visited the lab on two separate days, where they were asked to complete two different daily processes. Both days they were fed sandwiches for lunch and then kept in the lab for three hours following lunch. On one day, the participants were asked to chew sugar free gum for 15 minutes every hour, over the three-hour period, and on the other they didn’t chew gum. Three hours following lunch, on both days, the participants were offered a variety of snacks, some high in carbohydrates, others high in sugar, and they were either low or high fat. They were allowed as much as they wanted. The participants were asked to complete questionnaires in regards to their cravings, hunger and energy levels on each day.

The study showed that chewing gum seemed to curb participants sweet and snack cravings while also helping to maintain energy through the entire day and reducing drowsiness after their lunch and before their afternoon snacks. Participants reported fewer cravings for sweets each time they were polled on the gum chewing day, but the opposite occurred on the day they didn’t chew gum. Participants snacked on 45 fewer snack calories and 60 fewer sweet calories on the day they chewed gum, compared to the day they went gum free. Paula J. Geiselman, lead researcher of the study and chief of woman’s health and eating behavior at Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Louisiana State University said, “This research supports the role of chewing gum as an easy, practical tool for managing snack, especially sweet snack, intake and cravings.”

Is chewing gum the newest diet strategy? Maybe, the new study supports the theory that chewing gum can curb sweet cravings and snack cravings while boosting energy levels. However, chewing sugar free gum does have some side effects. Previous research that examined patients MRI’s showed chewing gum actually increased blood flow to the brain which could be the reason participants experienced increased energy levels. Wrigley’s is currently sponsoring several other projects to look into potential benefits to chewing gum and the links, but for now you may want to reach for that stick of sugar free gum rather than the Twinkie or bag of chips. Just a few less calories a day can result in weight loss.

The Universal Power of Gratitude

April 24th, 2009

In the USA we celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November every year. However, I’ve come to understand that there is great, POSITIVE power in having an “attitude of gratitude” all year long, that can create measurable differences in your life.

No matter where in the world you call home, and whether you traditionally take a day to celebrate the idea of giving thanks, or not — let this be a reminder to stop and really take the time to count your blessings.
Counting your blessings and taking time to appreciate the special people in your life can be done any time, any place, at no financial expense… and it’s truly a gift to yourself, as well as to those you thank.

That’s because, simply, what you focus on grows! As a result, you begin to experience even more to be grateful for in your life!
In fact, a daily practice of writing your gratitude lists can literally create miracles for you, as your mood is consistently lifted by the wonderful, energized feelings you generate, by your powerful decision to CHOOSE your own thoughts, concentrating on realizing just how much you already have to feel thankful for!

I would also suggest that you keep these lists in a special notebook or computer file, and not share them with anybody. I’ve learned that until our dreams are actually manifested, it’s best to either keep them and our gratitude lists to ourselves or ONLY shared with those whom we can utterly trust to add SUPPORTIVE energy to our gratitude and dreams. Otherwise we may create an “energy leak” that will deflate our efforts. Keep your gratitude lists sacred, and build up their energy by prizing them as you would a treasure… each day as you add to your “energy bank” of gratitude, the potency of your lists will grow!

Taking the time out of your busy schedule to make your gratitude lists on a regular basis, and making the effort to express your gratitude OFTEN to the special people in your life, is a gift that can be given freely to yourself and to those you care for. And, your heartfelt words of appreciation are often MORE precious and long-cherished by the receiver than even the most expensive purchased gift could ever be!
